The observance of the Annual National Women’s Month Celebration for the Month of March was how  LGU Pio V. Corpus manifested its support to localizing the Magna Carta of Women with the theme “We Make Change Work for Women”.

The whole month activity kicked off with a Walk for a Cause from Sito Gaway-gaway, Calongongan to the Municipal Plaza on March 1, 2018 with P50.00 registration fee per participant. Proceeds were for the evacuees affected by the eruption of Mount Mayon in Albay. Fun Zumba as well as the Opening Ceremony headed by Municipal Mayor Allan T. Lepasana followed, which was attended by LGU Officials, organized women’s group in 18 barangays, municipal and national employees. A total of 329 participants with 270 women (80.07%) and 59 men (19.03%) supported the activity.

Another highlight of the Women’s Month Celebration was the conduct of the 1st Women’s Summit on March 8, 2018. It was participated by 195 female (97%)  and 6 male (3%) with a total of 201 attendees. Invited as local resource persons on interesting and important topics related to women’s welfare, development, protection and empowerment were LGOO VI Myla J. Borres who discussed on the “Legal Bases of the National Women’s Month Celebration and the Role of DILG in the Implementation the Magna Carta of Women at the Local Level”; Social Welfare II of Masbate Social Welfare and Development (SWAD) Office, Amie Marie E. Castillo on “Salient Points of RA 9710 – Magna Carta of Women”; Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer (PSWDO), Amy B. Danao on “Women’s Participation in Local Governance”; TESDA Specialist I of the Masbate Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Arnold D. Gulosino on “Programs and Services for Women” while Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Gerasma M. Balingasa, enlightened the attendees on “Health Programs and Services for Women”.

Mayor Allan T. Lepasana shared an Inspirational Message during the program as he talked about women as part and parcel of the success of men and that more women nowadays are already empowered. According to him, though, he will still see to it that the marginalized women sector will be benefit more with the programs and services by the LGU out of its Gender and Development (GAD) Fund and other fund sources.

During the Women’s Summit five (5) slots allocated for women in every barangay availed of PAPSMEAR. Women’s organization also displayed items for sale – handicrafts, food products, ect. – during the activity.

Other equally important activities undertaken by the LGU were the Violence Against Women (VAW) Desk Functionality conducted by the Municipal Interagency Monitoring Team for the 18 barangays from last March 2, 6-7, 9 and 14, 2018; Training on Enriched Modular Packages for Women on March 12-14, 2018 participated by the 18 Women’s Organization President and Vice President; Barangay Gender and Development (GAD) Planning and Budgeting for FY 2019 on March 12-13, 2018 and the Orientation Seminar on Magna Carta of Women in clustered barangays on March 15-16, 19-21, 2018.

Most of the activities undertaken were funded out of the 5% Gender and Development (GAD) Fund of the LGU for FY 2018. The barangays also provided counterpart for the transportation allowances of their participants and other expenses out of their Barangay GAD Fund which is aligned to the municipal GAD priorities.

March is indeed a month highlighted by activities for making change for the Corpusanon women on their welfare, development, protection and empowerment. LGOO VI Myla J. Borres
